Majority of new home owners happy with their new build home

Results from the latest Home Builders Federation (‘HBF’) Consumer Satisfaction Survey show the overwhelming majority of new home buyers are happy with their new home and would recommend their house builder to a friend.

HBF’s national survey of house builders was launched in 2005 in response to recommendations in the Barker Review of housing of 2004. This is the twelfth self-completion survey which covers the period October 2015 to September 2016. The survey is the largest of its kind in the UK.

Over 90,000 surveys were sent out which represents an increase of 61% from three years ago and this in itself reflects the substantial increase in the number of new homes being built across the UK.

56% of the forms were returned and 84% of respondents (slightly down from 85% last year) would recommend their builder to a friend with over 90% saying they would buy another new build home in the future.

The survey measures a number of areas including:

  • whether the home was completed on time;
  • the cleanliness of the home on move in day;
  • the information provided about the home and the layout of the home.

The survey is undertaken, and the results analysed, by the National House Building Council. Ipsos MORI (a leading market research company in the UK and Ireland) has undertaken a full independent review of the Customer Satisfaction Survey and its processes and concluded that the HBF survey is a robust measure of customer satisfaction in the new homes industry.

The results provide a welcome boost at a time when media coverage of the industry is not always positive and the political spotlight is focused on the overwhelming need for housing.
